Organize pages and folders
Add your own pages, group them in folders, drag to reorder the sidebar, and take pages down.
The sidebar of the Pages section is the structure of your site. Readers see the same folders and order after you publish. Use it to add pages Docup did not write, group related pages, and decide what comes first.
Add a page#
Use the New page button (+) at the top of the sidebar, or the one next to a folder.
- Enter a Title of up to 80 characters.
- Optionally enter a Folder of up to 60 characters. Pick an existing folder from the list or type a new name to create one.
- Choose Create page.
The path is built from the folder and the title, so "Rate limits" in the folder "API" becomes api/rate-limits. A page and a folder cannot share a name. New pages are drafts and have no source files, so pushes never change them.
Organize the sidebar#
The sidebar is made of top-level pages and folders. A folder is the first part of a page's path.
- Drag a page to change its order, or into another folder.
- Drag a folder header to reorder whole folders.
- Moving a page to another folder changes its path, and the editor follows it to the new address.
- A folder with no pages left disappears.
- Folder names are shown in a readable form:
api-referenceappears as "Api reference".
Moves and ordering are drafts like text. Readers keep the old paths and order until you publish. Sorting is turned off while you filter the sidebar with the search box.
Page indicators#
Each page in the sidebar displays a colored marker to show its state:
- Red indicator: Docup could not write this page. The page title also appears muted in the sidebar.
- Amber indicator: You have made edits to this page in the dashboard that are saved as drafts, or a repository push updated the underlying code and the changes are waiting for your review. See Review suggestions.
Take a page down#
- Unpublish page turns a live page back into a draft. Readers get "not found", and your text stays in the dashboard. If it was the last live page, the whole site goes offline.
- Delete page removes the page and its draft for good. A live page leaves the site at the same time.
How paths work#
A page's path is its address on your site. guides/editor is served at your-address.docup.dev/guides/editor. A path has at most one folder level, and the page named index is the front page of the site. The home page must stay at the top level and cannot be moved into a folder. Moving a page to another folder changes its path, so links to the old address stop working once you publish. Docup does not create redirects.
Before moving a live page, search your other pages for links to it. Links between pages use the path, such as [Publishing](/guides/publishing).
