# Site and domain

Change your docup.dev address and see which domain features are available now and which are coming.

**Settings → Site and domain** shows where your docs live and lets you change the address.

## Docup address

Every site is served at `your-address.docup.dev`.

1. Open **Site and domain**.
2. Type a new value in the **Address** field. It is lowercased for you.
3. Wait for the check under the field. It tells you whether the address is available.
4. Choose **Save**.

The rules are the same as when you created the project: 3 to 40 characters, lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens, no hyphen at the start or end, and not one of the reserved names listed in [Getting started](/getting-started).

> **Warning:** Changing the address of a published site breaks every link that was shared with the old one. The old address stops working as soon as you save. If the site is not published yet, nothing links to it, so you can change it freely.

The **Site address** field shows the full address with a copy button. It always works. When your custom domain is active, it automatically redirects visitors and search engines to your custom domain.

## Visibility

Sites are **Public**: anyone with the link can read them, and search engines can list them unless you turn that off in [Search and sharing](/settings/search). Private docs for authorized readers only are marked as coming soon.

## Custom domain

You can serve your docs from a subdomain you own, such as `docs.acme.com`. Your `docup.dev` address keeps working next to it.

> **Note:** Custom domains require Cloudflare for SaaS. If this is not set up on your server (such as in local setup), the field is disabled and shows "Custom domains are not available on this server."

### Connect a custom domain

1. Open **Site and domain**.
2. Type your domain in the **Your own domain** field.
3. Choose **Add domain**.
4. Log in to your DNS provider and add a `CNAME` record with these details:

| Field | Value | Description |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Type** | `CNAME` | The DNS record type. |
| **Name** | Your domain (e.g., `docs.acme.com`) | Some providers require only the subdomain prefix, such as `docs`. |
| **Target** | `cname.docup.dev` | If your DNS is on Cloudflare, set the record to DNS-only (grey cloud). |

### Verification states

Docup automatically checks your domain status. While waiting, the dashboard refreshes the status every 15 seconds.

| State | Description | Action |
| :--- | :--- | :--- |
| **Active** | The domain is working. Readers find the docs here. Links, search results, and the sitemap use this domain. | None required. |
| **Waiting for DNS** | Cloudflare is checking the DNS propagation. | Wait for the DNS changes to apply, or choose **Check again**. |
| **Not working** | Cloudflare could not set up the domain or stopped waiting for the DNS record. | Check the DNS record, choose **Check again** to retry, or remove and re-add the domain. |

### Remove a domain

To disconnect your domain, choose **Remove** next to the domain name. The docs stop answering on that domain, and all links fall back to your `docup.dev` address. You can add the domain again later.
