# Publishing your site

Preview your draft, see exactly what goes live, publish, and take the site or a single page offline.

Everything you write is a draft until you publish. Publishing is one click, and a summary shows what will change before anything does.

## Preview your draft

Choose **Preview** in the top bar to open your draft site in a new tab. It looks exactly like the live site and includes everything that is not live yet: new pages, text edits, moved pages and a new sidebar order. Use it to check a change before readers see it.

## Publish

Choose **Publish docs**, or **Publish changes** once the site is live.

- If the site is already live and has no draft changes, an **Up to date** indicator appears in place of the publish button.
- If the site is not live yet and has no draft text to publish, the **Publish docs** button is disabled. Hovering over it displays a tooltip explaining why.
- Otherwise, choosing the button opens a dialog listing the exact changes that will go live.

For a first publish, the dialog shows how many pages go live and the address they will have. For later publishes, it groups pages in a list with the following labels:

| Label | Meaning |
| --- | --- |
| **New** | A draft page that has never been live. |
| **Changed** | A live page with newer draft text. |
| **Moved** | A live page whose path or folder changed. |

If the sidebar order of your pages differs from the live order, the dialog indicates that the pages will change order. Sidebar reordering enables the publish button even when no page text or path has changed, allowing you to publish a new page order on its own.

Choose **Publish now** to confirm. Text, paths and order go live together in a single step, so two pages can swap addresses without their links clashing. Docup then clears the cached copy of your site and refreshes the index that Ask AI answers from.

> **Note:** A page needs text to go live. Pages that are empty, or that failed and are still empty, stay out of the publish list.

### Where your site lives

A published site is available at `your-address.docup.dev`. You can change the address in [Site and domain](/settings/domain). A workspace can publish up to 50 times a day.

## Unpublish the site

You can take the entire site offline at any time. This can be done in two ways:

- Open **General settings** (/settings/general) and choose **Unpublish site** in the **Danger zone** section.
- Open the command palette, search for **Unpublish the site**, and confirm.

Readers who open your docs get a "not found" page, and Ask AI stops answering. Every page goes back to a draft, but no text is lost. **Publish docs** brings the whole site back in one click.

## Unpublish one page

On a live page, choose **Unpublish page**. The page becomes a draft and readers get "not found". If it was the last live page, the site goes offline too, because a site without live pages cannot be reached.

## Updates after a push

When your repository changes, Docup can update pages for you. For a page you have not edited, on a site that is already live, the new text goes live without a manual publish. Edited pages get a suggestion instead. See [Keeping docs up to date](/guides/updates).
